2012 "Race to Hawaii" Qualifying - Round 4 Final standings

There were breezy conditions today on the Stanford Golf course which was playing much softer and therefore longer after a couple of rain storms this week.

It was Patrick Grimes who won the day...

Patrick had worked hard on his game over the winter break and in particular on his short game, green reading and putting speed. Finally, when everything was on the line, he reaped the rewards by firing a superb 3-under-par 67. In the battle for second place on the day, Andrew Yun claimed a little vengeance by making back-to-back birdies on his final two holes (4 and 5) to clip Patrick Rodgers by a shot. Patrick R. nonetheless earned an emphatic 11 shot victory in the "2012 Race to Hawaii" Qualifying Tournament with his -10 cumulative total. It is the first double-digit qualifying tournament win in Stanford Men's Golf history recorded under Coach Ray!

The Hawaii (UH Hilo Invitational) 6-man traveling roster will be announced to the squad tomorrow morning. 5 players will form the team and one player will compete individually.

Round 3 - 1/21/12

Again, challenging conditions greeted the Cardinal Qualifiers today at the Cal Club. It was a cold and blustery afternoon with showers rolling through from the Pacific.

All things considered, players ground out their scores very well. Here is the leaderboard for round 3 scores only...

If you are looking for the scores of Marcel Puyat and Wilson Bowen, unfortunately both players were forced to retire from the tournament due to sickness (flu) and injury respectively. Both players are hopeful to play in Monday's final round at Stanford Golf Course.

Round 2 - 1/20/12

It was a cool, damp and windy round at Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course and Patrick Rodgers was a man on a mission. After finishing with 3 birdies in a row to earn pole position in round one at Stanford, Patrick had this putt to start with 3 consecutive birdies today...

...which he made and amounted to this terrific scorecard...

The 66 was clearly outstanding on the day but Cameron Wilson also had and admirable 73 (+1) which featured 3 birdies and an eagle. Steven Kearney's round of 74 (+2) included 6 birdies and was good for 3rd best score of the day. Perhaps and indication of how tricky things were on the greens, Andrew Yun, 1st team all American and top of the golfstat putting rankings for the past two years 5-putted the 3rd green and was +8 after just 6 holes. Andrew's round of 76 (+4) was therefore a phenomenal comeback!

Round 1 - 1/18/12

The Cardinal are back after Winter Break and raring to go in this new year!

Today was the first round of our annual "Race to Hawaii" Qualifying. This event is a seriously competitive 72 hole tournament in itself, but then when you factor in how a strong showing could earn players a spot on the traveling team to compete in the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate at Waikaloa on the Big Island of Hawaii, the consequence stakes are ramped up!

Round 1 was played over The Stanford Golf Course which, due to very little rain this winter, is currently in pristine condition with firm, fast rolling greens and fairways. As you can see from the picture (left) looking over toward the pro shop and first tee from the clubhouse, it was a beautiful crisp day. Set aside difficult pin placements, these somewhat benign conditions are not necessarily how conditions will remain for the next three rounds set out for Friday January 20th at Palo Alto Municipal, Saturday January 21st at The Cal Club and Monday January 23rd at Stanford Golf Course.

Hello Friends of Stanford Men's Golf!

It has been a while since I have recorded a blog post but the time is right to share with you a lot of exciting things that lie ahead for our team in the new year. The guys started winter quarter on Monday and the vibe has been great. We have hit the weight room for winter training right away and the team continues to make improvements in the important elements of their training. We spend time focusing on dynamic flexibility, core strength, and endurance. The cardio portion is very demanding and it not only helps our team be as fit as possible but it also builds mental strength which is a a key component to good golf. I believe the harder you can make your practice and preparation the easier the performance will be! Good college golf teams are mentally tough and get better a the conditions are more demanding. We strive for this ability.

We also will start qualifying for our first event in the new year next week. We are planning on playing 72 holes and with our destination being Hawaii the guys really bear down and grind out good scores. A week away from school to a beautiful place do wonders for ones focus! The event in Hawaii will be hosted by UH-Hilo and held at the Waikoloa Kings Course. The wind can blow and the field is top notch so we will need to have our best stuff right out of the blocks. I think with 2.5 weeks of good training and prep our team will be up for the challenge no doubt! The rest of the spring will offer some great opportunities to compete with quality events at San Diego CC and TPC Southern Highlands in Las Vegas. I really believe that winter quarter sets up a great run in the spring so looking forward to the results.

In other news ....I have officially named seniors David Chung and Wilson Bowen our Captains for this season. Both guys have taken on nice leadership roles already but we wanted to make the formal announcement as well. As a coach it is good to know you can rely on your leaders to guide the team from within and let success and hard work grow through both example and support. I am confident that both these guys are up for the responsibility and will carry our torch well.

Finally, we hope you will all mark you calenders to come out and support The US Intercollegiate at Stanford, March 30,31 and April 1 as well as the NCAA Regional at Stanford, May 17-19. Both events will be great opportunities for spectators to see very high level golf up close and personal on the beautiful Stanford Golf Course. We are honored to have the chance to host both events and they both will not disappoint in terms of long drives, crafty putts, and overall competition.

The Team heading to Cordevalle

It only seems a few moments ago that the team arrived on campus to prepare for Olympia Fields and set off along the Road to Riviera (venue of the 2012 NCAA Championship Finals). With experience gained from competing at The Prestige and Isleworth, we now head to Cordevalle for the final event of the Fall which completes the first third of our season.

The result at Isleworth (Team came 7th with three players finishing inside the top-10) was yet more evidence of the critical importance that strength in depth has when competing in medal team events. With a somewhat young team it is therefore great news that we will have as many as eight players gaining competitive experience this coming week since The Gifford Collegiate Championship at Cordevalle is a six-man team (counting the five best scores each day) and a further two players will also join the field as individuals.

Here are the results from the qualifying outings this week to decide the Cordevalle line up:

First of all, whilst five of the team were in Isleworth, the rest of the team (minus Wilson Bowen who is currently sidelined whilst he gets treatment for a neck injury) played a 36-hole preliminary qualifying event at the Stanford Golf Course.

The results were as follows:

It's a fairly rapid turn around of ten days between returning from The Prestige and heading over to Florida for The Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. Prestige Qualifying - Final Result

Over the past few weeks, since a remarkable team victory at Olympia Fields, a new expression has been heard upon numerous occasions... "You can't win them all unless you win the first!" Well that's what Patrick Rodgers has managed to do again this week since shooting a final round 66 to secure the top place finish in our Prestige Qualifying competition, his first time out in such an event. Some say that just making the top 5 players is the main thing of importance, but in such a competitive group, winning a qualifying quite literally means beating some of the world's best amateur golfers!

The Siebel Varsity Golf Training Complex was the venue for round 3 of Prestige Qualifying. The team players made three loops on the 6 hole course (three Par 3s and three Par 4s) designed to test resilience and strategy. What's more the weather conditions were cold and damp to make the round an even greater challenge.

Welcome to a new season for Stanford Men's Golf as we set off along the road to Riviera!

The team gathered together yesterday (Thursday 9/8/11) and following team meetings, physicals and other formalities they were raring to get out and play the Stanford Golf Course in fine condition... prepared specifically for this initial Fall Arrival Qualifying Competition!

This year we have 3 new Freshmen to add and make impact on the strength of the Stanford Golf roster: Patrick Grimes, Marcel Puyat and Patrick Rodgers.

Fall Arrival Qualifying Competition for the Fighting Illini Invitational to be held at Olympia Fields, Illinois (September 16-18).

Conditions:

1 Exemption for Patrick Rodgers who was not able to play. He is currently in Aberdeen, Scotland representing Team USA in the Walker Cup.

3 "Open Spots" earned by the three players who shoot the lowest 4 round total through our Fall Arrival Qualifying Competition event.

1 Coaches Pick which generally goes to the 4th place finisher in the Qualifying event.

Summer Update!

Dear Cardinal Golf Faithful!!!!

Hard to believe that August is already here. Time during the summer flies by with so much going on in the golf office as well as with the team. I thought I would take some time to post a few updates and hopefully interesting tidbits to get us through until the team arrives back on Sept. 8th!

The Stanford Golf Camp finished up last weekend in good fashion with our very popular Parent / Child Camp. We had a blast and enjoyed some quality golf time with some really neat families. I don't know what is more pressure ... trying to help out a young camper or their Mom and Dad! Everyone enjoyed the weekend and the Stanford Golf Course and Siebel Varisity Golf Complex stole the show. The summer was full of other sessions as well and we had the chance to meet and teach kids from all over the world. Golf is becoming a global game and that is seen in the much larger numbers of kids coming from Asia, France, and South America as an example. We almost hit the 400 person mark this summer with camps and it has been a fun and educational experience for me as co-director with our women's coach, Caroline O'Connor. The guys have been very active this summer and thanks to Bob Stevens, our webmaster on www.stanfordmensgolf.org, for following their progress so closely. It looks like we will have at least four or five guys in the US AM in a few weeks at Erin Hills which is a neat accomplishment. The USGA exemption this year of the top-50 Am's in the World Ranking into the AM is a great idea and will definitely benefit our guys this summer and down the road. Another fun thing to follow has been the quest of the few of our guys to make the Walker Cup Team which is selected soon and that takes place in Scotland in early September. David Chung, Andrew Yun, and Patrick Rodgers all have a chance so it will be exciting to see if any of them will be chosen for Amateur Golf's version of the Ryder Cup. Of particular note ... incoming frosh Patrick Rodgers had a very impressive win last week in the Porter Cup in Niagra Falls, NY. The Porter Cup is one of the strongest fields all year in Amateur Golf. Patrick had 2 eagles and a birdie on is final nine to come from behind to win. Very impressive for a guy that hasn't yet gotten to college! Well done Patrick. Andrew Yun, Cameron Wilson, and David Chung also had solid finishes.

Coach Rowe and I have spent much of our time this summer on the recruiting trail. It is fun to see how many kids have an intial interest in Stanford University and all that it offers. It becomes our job to figure out who has the game and grades to match up! We have traveled a bunch this summer scouting players and feel good about the developments we have had in the 2012 entry class as well as positive indications in the 2013 and 2014 entry classes. These young guys can really play!!! I didn't even know what under par golf was when I was that age and so many of these young players go low on a regular basis. I must say however that the kids that we like the best are the ones that are not "burnt out" with junior golf. Competing is one thing but if you have an entourage at age 14 complete with swing coach, parents, caddy, work out guru, and sports psyche it might be a bit much. It is amazing what parents today are spending on junior golf and I hope that in the future we can go back to a dynamic that isn't as hyped up as pro golf... it has to be about the competition and score... not the dog and pony show!

Speaking of the show ... the team will report back to campus on September 8th for physicals, meetings, and qualifying. Coach Rowe and I can't wait! Wish it was tomorrow! We will have plenty of work to do before we head off to Olympia Fields and our first event of the season in the Fighting Illini Classic. A very strong filed on a world class course ... all we can ask for. I think it is safe to say that everyone is excited about the prospects for the year but it will require a lot of hard work and proper focus.

Finally, I want to be sure that everyone knows about the Cardinal Golf Classic 2011. The date we have picked this year for our annual fundraiser is Sept. 30th. Come one and all. More info can be found on our website. Thanks in advance for all of your support!

Highlights from NCAA Regionals Team Qualifying Tournament

Since the Pac-10 Championship at Stanford, the team has played four rounds of a team qualifying competition in order to determine the traveling roster for NCAA Regionals at Wolf Run, Indiana.

Here are a few of the Highlights...

Round 1 held on 5/6/11 at The California Golf Club:

It is just a 35 minute drive up to the Cal Club from Stanford but the change in conditions were a bit of a shock... minus 30 degrees fahrenheit and plus 15mph of wind! Nevertheless, scores were very respectable. David Chung and Cameron Wilson tied for low score with 73s whilst Graham Brockington and Steve Kearney shot 74s.

Round 2 held on 5/7/11 at Stanford Golf Course during the Alumni Match:

This time it was cool and breezy on the home track. Low scorers were Messrs. Brockington and Wilson with 72.

The Alumni took full use of their experience and forward tee advantage to beat the Team for the second time in three years!

Round 3 held on 5/11/11 at The Olympic Golf Club (Lake Course):

The beautiful and challenging course was somewhat tamed by Steven Kearney who played solidly for a round of 70 to take the low score by two from Steve Ziegler.

Round 3 held on 5/13/11 at Lake Merced Golf Club:

The story of the day was Graham Brockington's clutch round of 69 that won him the low score of the day by 3 from Sihwan Kim who shot a level par 72. With that 3 under par round, Graham also won the qualifying competition by 3 strokes.

Following play at Lake Merced the NCAA Regionals traveling roster was announced. The Team that will play Wolf Run, Indiana are:

Stanford Golf Course - Top 5 Spectator Viewing Spots

As you will know, The Pac-10 Men's Golf Championships will be hosted at Stanford next weekend April 29th - May 1st. Spectators ENTRY IS FREE !

Here is a countdown of the best spots to watch some of the Nation's best players in action on the Stanford Golf Course:

5. 8th/12th/13th holes -

A favorite spot for the golfing connoisseur who likes to watch a bit of everything. From this vantage point you can watch mid iron shots to the 8th hole par 3, drives on the 13th hole par 4 and second shots/chip shots around the 12th hole par 4 signature hole (with the tree in the fairway!)

4. 1st Tee -

Nerves will be jangling over this opening teeshot from elevation. Never mind the Red Barn on the left, players know that a good drive down the fairway will set up a birdie or an eagle but the thick rough either side of the fairway will make their work difficult.

From the vantage point adjacent to the 1st tee there is plenty of activity from the practice putting green, pro-shop and clubhouse.

3. 9th Green -

Sit in the bleachers or on the grass bank and watch some middle of the round action on this interesting par four where players take their drives over the trees and hazard into the fairway. A good drive leaves just a short iron to the green but it is made complicated by uneven stances and a putting surface that is up out of view. Beware some challenging pin positions on this green that has always been notorious for 3 putts!

Close by from this area you can also watch some bombed drives from the 10th and 12th tees.

2. 14th Green -

The grass banks around the 14th green provide a natural stadium that is just as impressive for spectators as it will be for the players themselves as they hit mid irons across the ravine with the beautiful S flowerbed in backdrop.

It is a perfect place to camp out and watch groups pass through or keep an eye on approach shots to the 11th green and teeshots from the 12th tee.

1. 18th Green -

This is the place where all the highs and lows of the previous two days will culminate in victory for one Pac-10 team and Individual Champion. Sit out on the terrace or in the bleachers with a cool beverage and keep an eye on the giant electronic scoreboard as players and teams jockey for the top spot on the leaderboard. Be sure not to miss the winning putt which will be somewhere between 1pm and 3pm on Sunday May 1st!

Post Season Begins - The Pac-10 Championships at Stanford

Post season is here and kicks off with the Cardinal defending their home turf at the Pac-10 Championships to be held at The Stanford Golf Course (April 29th - May 1st).

By all accounts the Stanford Golf Course is in fabulous playing condition. The greens are firm and fast, the rough is growing and pins are set to be a challenge! Within the Stanford Golf Team, preparations are underway and game plans are being made to navigate the course as well as to do combat with a field jam packed with great teams.

Last season, Andrew Yun shaved a full two shots upon his scoring average between the regular season and the Championship Season. That level of play has certainly carried over and been rewarded with a win as well as five other top 5 place finishes plus with the recent news of a Palmer Cup Team USA selection. Right now as we head into Championship Season, the Cardinal are looking for one or two more of its players to step up a gear alongside Andrew and take a shot at regaining the Pac-10 title that has alluded Stanford since 1994!

This event is a once every 10 years opportunity not to be missed. Come watch the nations best collegiate golfers play the Stanford golf course! Entry is FREE! The Pac-10 and tournament organizers have the venue set up in a very spectator friendly way (more spectator information and a Golf Village activity program to follow).

Siebel Varsity GTC - PowerPlay Challenge 2/13/11

Cameron Wilson fired an impressive 27 points today to win the first of a series of PowerPlay Challenge events held over the world renowned Siebel Varsity Golf Training Complex.

The PowerPlay version of the game is fun to use in training because its two-flag, risk-reward format offers many opportunities for players to excel through their decisiveness and and ability to execute great golf shots when the consequence stakes are ramped up.

When Cameron hit his 280yard 3wood to just 15 feet on the final hole and had a putt for an eagle on a PowerPlay pin (worth 8points), a runaway 33 point total was on the cards. Ultimately, his "three putt par" proved not to be costly this time around. In a game where a simple "short-sided" error on the final hole can mean the difference between a fancy 24 points or meager 16 points, at least two players were to fall foul of that scenario. Meanwhile, Andrew Yun (playing with Sihwan Kim in the final pairing) might well have snatched victory from CW with a final birdie, however, the firm "Blasi Green" rocketed his ball long and over the out-of-bounds fence onto the 2nd hole of the Stanford Golf Course. Sihwan duly rolled home a birdie to leapfrog his way into 2nd place!

Hawaii Qualifying Tournament

With a phenomenal final round of 66, David Chung won the Inaugural Stanford Golf "Race to Hawaii" Qualifying Tournament. Andrew Yun also fired a gallant 68
over the challenging San Francisco Golf Club course
in attempt to overcome a 4 shot deficit but Chung held firm.
Senior Captain, Steve Ziegler, carded four rock solid even par rounds to finish 3rd.

A New Year ....

Hello Friends of Stanford Men's Golf....

It has been a few months since I have checked in personally on the blog. My new Assistant Phil has done a great job posting some fun pictures and updates the last few posts so credit to him!

We are at that time of year where the butterflies start to crank up and the eager anticipation for the spring schedule comes to life. We all believe we have a great team and now the challenge is to put it on show and do what it takes in preparation to let it all come forward. All I can say is that on campus right now the Cardinal mojo is high! What a win in the Orange Bowl, the Women hoopsters knocking off UConn, and the Men's Basketball team taking down the top team in the Pac-10 a few days back with their win against the Washington Huskies. All good vibes!!! This makes us all feel like good things are in store for Men's Golf.

The team enjoyed their time off and in impressive fashion did really well on their fall quarter finals. It is great validation for the players that come here to know that they might miss as much or more school than any team in the Athletic Department but yet the team GPA usually is north of 3.2, Impressive to say the least and credit to the team for their hard work both on and off the golf course.

We are now immersed in our off season training regimen of workouts three days per week and practice on the Stanford Course and Siebel Complex. The guys have enjoyed a few new practice games that Coach Rowe has also implemented testing all facets of their game.

We are all preparing for our next big event which will take place the first week of Feb. on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is the strongest field we will play in all year as teams from all over the country fly in to enjoy the beautiful weather and good competition. This year we will compete on the Waikoloa Kings Course which is gem and a very strong test of golf. It is neat to see how intense qualifying is for this first tournament among the guys. This is driven both by the hard work they have put in over the winter as well as the keen draw of the destination. Let's see ... playing golf in Hawaii for the week or staying back on campus to study... the preference is very clear!!! Our record in Hawaii has been solid over the years ... we have come out victorious two out of the last three years! Lets see what happens.

On the home front, we are all very excited to be following the exploits of our first PGA Tour Players in a while. Zack Miller and Joe Bramlett played really well at the Q-school this past fall and both are one event into their rookie year on Tour. I never knew PGATour.com could garner so much of my attention following their scores! Also fun to see David Chung enjoy a few weeks as the World's #1 ranked amateur according to the R&A. Impressive to say the least and we are all eager to see how he plays this winter and spring.

Also on the radar around here is the upcoming Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship that will be held at Stanford April 29,30 and May 1. We only host once every 10 or now 12 years so we are working hard to make it very memorable. Stanford's last Pac-10 crown was in 1994 so we have something to prove on our home course. Focusing on the process and quality preparation will get us where we want to go.

Finals Week

What a week for Stanford Golf !

Whilst the current team have been taking final exams for their fall classes, two recent graduates have undergone a major golfing examination and passed with distinction. Congratulations to Zack Miller and Joseph Bramlett who have earned their 2011 season PGA Tour cards. Read more about both players and their landmark achievement here.

No one person will be more delighted to hear this latest news than Coach Wally Goodwin, guest of honor for the Stanford Men's Golf Club annual dinner held tonight (12/7/10) at the Faculty Club. Many sports fans would really love to have been a fly on the wall there tonight to gain some insights by listening in to Coach Goodwin's stories! As would Coach Ray and I, but unfortunately we were not able to hear our former coach's address due to a clash with the GCAA Coaches Conference. Thanks therefore go to team captain Steve Ziegler for passing along our apologies.

Of course there must have been plenty of talk about the upcoming Stanford Football "Orange Bowl" too... much to celebrate!

2010 Big Game Cup

Since our return from Cordevalle Stanford Golf has hosted two of its fundraiser events. The Cardinal Classic was held on November 12th and the Big Game Cup took place yesterday (November 18th). Both were held at the Stanford Golf Course and were lots of fun for everyone, but most importantly they provided great opportunities for coaches and players to express thanks to its many friends and avid supporters of the Cardinal golf program.

The Big Game Cup matches up die hard Cal Bear supporting golfers against their Cardinal counterparts in the run up to Big Game football weekend.

By an extremely narrow margin (32.5 to 30.5), Stanford BEAT CAL ...It all came down to the last score posted!

In the Big Game Football matches, Cal have been victorious in the past 7/8 matches. Like Coach Harbaugh, Coach Ray recalled similar dismay for his side prior to this latest Big Game Golf Cup encounter. However, whilst no-one can precisely quote the correlation between Big Game Golf and Big Game Football, Ray and his Stanford supporters are hopeful that perhaps this triumph signifies a turn in fortune.

Friendly rivalry was the spirit of the day and both Coach Desimone of Cal and Coach Ray of Stanford exemplified that spirit in their post match presentations. Turning attentions to the strength of present day Men's Golf teams on both sides of the Bay, "In all my years coaching, I have never known such a phenomenally high standard of college golf and the absolute icing on the cake would be to see Stanford and Cal battle it out down the stretch for the PAC 10 Championships at Stanford and then the 2011 NCAA National Championships at Oklahoma State," said Coach Desimone.

If you are up early tomorrow morning you can listen to Coach Ray and Coach Desimone talking Big Game on 680 am radio "Hooked on Golf" at around 7.15am.

The Cardinal team now break for Thanksgiving followed by "dead week" before "finals" exams.

Cordevalle - The final event of the Fall

The Cardinal are heading down to Cordevalle this weekend to dispute the final event of the Fall. "Both as a team and for each individual player, this is the last chance we'll get to put it on show in 2010" rallied Coach Ray to his men following a team workout earlier this week, "it's time to make a statement ahead of a spring Championship season that is really not far away now".

There several causes for optimism as the players prepare to compete at the UCLA hosted event:

1. It feels somewhat like a home event given that the venue is situated only 45 minutes south of the Stanford campus at San Martin. The players know the course well and had a chance to play the course on Monday this week.

2. Stanford picked up first place last year after shooting a team total of 24 under par... See last years results on Golfstat.

3. Sihwan Kim and David Chung finished 2nd and tied 3rd at Cordevalle last year respectively. Sihwan is also a former champion of the event having won it his freshman year. Andrew Yun is fresh off an individual victory at the Prestige and a 4th place finish at Isleworth.

4. David Chung has just returned to the lineup since representing Team USA at the World Amateur in Argentina last week and the Junior All-American is tipped to notch up multiple collegiate victories this season '10-'11. Chung is a player who knows how to win since his stellar summer of winning top level amateur events (the Porter Cup and Western Amateur) back to back this past summer.

The PGA West Quest - Getting into the routine...

Perhaps a little introduction before I get into my first Coach’s Blog… My name is Philip Rowe, I was a member of the Stanford golf team from 1999-2002 and I have just returned to The Farm after playing on various professional golf tour circuits in Europe. The complete story about my appointment to the position of Assistant Coach with the Men’s Golf Program can be read in this interview.

I have now been with the team 4 weeks and PGA West was my first event as a “Coach”. I have thoroughly enjoyed everything. So far as the results from the PGA West event goes, hopefully you have had the opportunity to check out the Stories of the Season: Report from The Prestige at PGA West. Since our return on Tuesday evening, one of the team players has even posted an update to the Players Blog… Here’s what Sophomore Andrew Yun had to say about his individual victory (by 6 shots) in the desert!

Andrew points out that “this new school year has brought a bit of the new along with the old” and that is definitely what the coaches are sensing as well. Despite adjustments to new routines, the freshmen have already made an impact within the team and are keeping some of the more experienced players sharp on their toes. Our top team lineup might still be under construction but tremendous depth means that every squad member is making preparations for their contribution in a successful NCAA Championship run (a 9th!).

Moving on from the first event in Olympia Fields to last week at PGA West, I think the ultimate encouraging sign is that with 9 holes to play in the final round, we were in contention and poised for both team and an individual victory. That’s the Cardinal back into the routine!

Dear Friends of Stanford Men's Golf,

The season is underway and we are off to the races...

The team has just returned from our first event at Olympia Fields and the first day of fall quarter classes was yesterday. Everyone is getting settled in and adjusting to new routines. My new Assistant Coach Phil Rowe also started last Friday so there is much to be excited about.

Pre-Season rankings are out and the Cardinal have placed well ... #2 in the Golf Coaches Poll, and #5 in GolfWeek. These polls are hard to judge but neat to see the team recognized for their potential.

The team wasn't happy with the result at Olympia Fields (t-9) but there seems to be plenty of positives to glean from the competition. Attitudes were all positive, the course was a true US Open test, and the vibe is good looking forward to the next event. I must say it was odd not being there personally with the team and just watching on Golfstat. What a stressful experience for the coach! Now I know how the must parents feel! We are expecting our second child any day now and thus being in Chicago for the start of potential labor was not a great idea on the home front! Rob Grube, one of our all time greats, was gracious enough to take the reigns for the trip and help the guys out as their coach for the tournament. Rob is a great role model for the boys with approach, knowledge, and work ethic in his own professional career. Thanks Rob for your help!

Next on the docket is the Stadium Course at PGA West and the Prestige. We always look forward to getting down to the desert and compliments of Pete Dye the Stadium Course is one of the all time great tests of golf. Eager to see how the team fares. I would encourage everyone that is reading this to consider coming down yourselves and making a weekend out of the Prestige. The LaQuinta Resort and PGA West take great care of us and they have also created a package rate for any of our "groupies" for discounts in golf, goodies, and resort fees. The summer is winding down!

Friends of Stanford Men's Golf:

A few months have gone by since my last post but much to report on the Stanford Golf Program. The team has been playing great in their individual summer events, I have hired a new assistant, and the new season is approaching with birdies in store!

I am proud to say that Stanford Golf has had a stellar run this summer in most of the nations top amateur fields. We have produced a US Open Competitor (Bramlett), the Northeast Amateur Champion (Bramlett), The Dogwood Champion (Yun), The San Diego Amateur Champion (Kearney), The Western Amateur Champion (Chung), and The Porter Cup Champion (Chung). Not to mention David Chung represented the Stars and Stripes on the United States Palmer Cup Team in grand fashion going 4-0 in his matches against GBI. To date, including alums and future Cardinal committed recruits, we have 6 players gearing up for the United States Amateur Championship in a few weeks at Chambers Bay. We also produced three golf All-American's last spring (David Chung, Sihwan Kim, Steve Ziegler) and one academic All-American (Steve Ziegler). Go Cardinal is all I can say!

Also thanks to Bob Stevens and Pat Phillips for all of their continued hard work keeping track of scores and postings on www.stanfordmensgolf.org.

It is also that time of year to start thinking about the season ahead. The team reports back on September 10 and we will be diving right in. Qualifying will get us ready for our first event again this year at Olympia Fields in the Chicago area ... a amazing course, stout field, and great warm-up for the season ahead.

If you haven't read already about our new assistant please check out Phil Rowe's link on the homepage. Phil is a perfect fit for what we are looking for and eager to welcome him back on the Farm. Phil plans to get going as our new assistant early next month. We all will miss Coach Matt Tight. I want to personally thank him for his dedication and hard work for our program over the last few years. We will miss him and we all wish him well as he moves on to greener pastures.

Finally, we hope you can all save the date for this fall's Cardinal Golf Classic. The Cardinal Golf Classic is slated for a 12:30 shotgun on Nov. 12th this year. We hope you can all make it and please contact us if you are interested in playing. If you don't already know the Cardinal Classic is our annual team fundraiser and it has grown into a really special day for the well being of the program. It is a guaranteed fun day and spaces fill up quickly so please mark it on your calendar.

I hope all of you have been making a bunch of birdies this summer and are enjoying this great game we all love. We are very fortunate to have the support of the Cardinal faithful and I have a feeling that this could be a special year for the team ....

Cardinal Faithful ....

If you haven't seen already we can up a bit short in our quest to win the program's 9th National title a few days ago at the Honors Course in TN. We had a great season and the NCAA finals were no different. I think the thing that sticks out about the tournament were the highs and lows and high drama that the team dealt with all week. It was really exciting the whole way ....

High ... Stanford comes back from a slow start the first two rounds of stroke play to get within the "top eight" number the final round with 9 holes to play.

Low .... The guys make a few bogies coming in the final round to end up just one shot out of the top 8 for match play but there are still schools on the course that can affect the final outcome.

High ... San Diego makes 5 bogies on the last hole to let us back in the top 8 and into a playoff the next morning to determine if we qualify for match play.

High ... Stanford plays the first set of playoff holes 2 under par (our best four out of 5 scores) to advance with San Diego and knocking out Arizona State to the second hole of the playoff.

High ... Stanford plays the second set of playoff holes 1 under par (our best four out of 5 scores) to get to match play ....

High / Low .... Stanford draws team medalist Oklahoma State in the first round.

High ... Stanford is up early in all the matches against OSU

Low ... OSU comes back to catch us with stellar putting and solid play to beat us 4 to 1 in the first match ... season ends.

High ... the body of the work from the season speaks for itself .... 3 team wins, a top-5 ranking all year, multiple all conference selections, a Palmer Cup selection, and a season that will be remembered as one of our best.

High ... prospects for next year .... Joseph Bramlett is only loss in starting 5 and Cameron Wilson and Shane Lebow join the squad with huge potential.

Two rounds in the book ....

Cardinal Faithful:

We have finished up two rounds here in the NCAA Championship at the Honors Course in Chattanooga, TN. The guys have fought hard over the last few days and are very close to the magic number ... the top eight teams that qualify for match play.

We haven't had our best round yet and I believe it will come tomorrow. We need to hit the ball in the fairway a few more times off the tee and we will be in good shape. Big numbers have also been our nemesis so far and our goal is to eliminate the "others". The course is very demanding so I am sure the scores will rise with the tension of the last day of stroke play. I am sure the greens will continue to firm up as well.

Hi Cardinal Faithful!

I hope to update my blog this week a few more times to keep you tuned in on our trip to the NCAA Finals in Chattanooga, TN at the Honors Course!

We are excited to get going tomorrow with our practice round at 9am. The guys spent today resting, practicing, and getting ready for the start of the week. We practiced today at UT - Chattanooga's new practice facility. A great spot to work out the kinks and thanks to Coach Mark Guhne for his hospitality. It was good to spend some time hitting and chipping off the Bermuda grass ... a tad different than what we see in CA.

Tomorrow we play at 9am in our practice round. It sounds like the course will be a real test. A drive in the rough and a wedge back to the fairway if you are not careful. The practice round is test in patience as there will be 30 teams on the course all trying to take in as much as they can before round 1.

We play the first round Tuesday starting at 12:12 off the 10th tee and then Wednesday we go early with the first time at 7am. Our pairing is with Oregon and Oklahoma State so everyone is excited about playing with two other very talented teams.

Post Season!

Hello Cardinal Faithful:

We are down to the nitty gritty and NCAA post season play! We find our NCAA Regional assignment next Monday May 10th, and eager to see what challenge lies ahead. The team is in good spirits after a close call at the Pac-10's last week at the ASU Karsten Course in Tempe. We jumped out to an impressive lead after the first day with some of the best golf I have witnessed out of our guys all season. We continued to play solid the rest of the event but hats off to the Washington Huskies for tracking us down. They closed strongly and ended up clipping us by three shots. A razor slim margin when counting five scores out of six guys. A ton of positives came out of the week even though finishing second is not the greatest feeling .... Sihwan Kim's 63 in round 1 and the play of Joseph Bramlett with three consecutive 66's were worth noting. I believe we have some good momentum as we approach Regionals and the guys have been grinding to be well prepared to try and win our 9th NCAA crown.

Recruiting for the new year continues to keep us busy as well. Cameron Wilson and Shane Lebow will be huge adds for us next year and in the 2011 entry class we have a very qualified, highly ranked, pool of players that will hopefully some day call themselves Cardinal!

I hope that if you are near our post season venues that you will come out and cheer us on! Go Cardinal and thanks for all of your support.

Hello Stanford Golf Fans!

A quick note to check in and update you on our recent trip this past week to the Callaway Collegiate Match Play event at the Dove Mountain Resort in Tucson. The team was coming off their winter quarter finals but still hoping for the best as we went down to experience the same course the WGA Accenture Match play was held on a month earlier. What a venue! Very demanding and beautiful! We won our first match against Indiana but it was a battle from there losing the next three matches in tight competition. Here is a picture of the guys during the practice round ...

There were some highlights that should be mentioned ... Freshman Steven Kearney played like a champ all week. He was one bad swing away from going 4-0 in his matches and he really did well considering it was only his second event of the year. Senior captain Joseph Bramlett also played well and was impressive in his final match, winning strongly.

All in all, it was one of those weeks that we will chalk up to experience and learn from. It is clear that Match Play is a very different format, and one that we will need to improve in, to have a chance to win another title. The picture below is how we felt all week ... Snake Bit! However, the beauty about this game is that you never know what you are going to get ... maybe next week at ASU we will return to the winners circle. Go Cardinal!

Hello Everybody!

It has been a few months since I last updated my blog so there is a bunch to share about the program.

The team is busy taking finals this week and is at the end of a very productive winter quarter. It was great to pick up our second win of the year in Hawaii at Mauni Lani Resort and kick off what hopefully turns out to be a great spring. A few weeks back the team finished 8th at the USC Collegiate Invite which a bit disappointing but there were some positives too. Senior Captain Joseph Bramlett worked his way back in the lineup and had a very solid showing for his first event in almost a year and a half. The team has reacted very well and we have put in a bunch of good work over the last few weeks looking forward to our next event, The Callaway Collegiate Match Play Tournament at Dove Mountain. This is the same course that the PGA Tour played on for the WGC Accenture Match Play Event. It looks to be a great test and eager to see how our guys perform in Tucson next week. If you are interested, on Wednesday, March 17th Golfweek TV will debut the Callaway Collegiate Match Play seeding show which will determine the first round matches. Another exciting development is that we have recently received an exemption for the individual winner of the 42nd Annual US Intercollegiate at Stanford into the 2010 Reno-Tahoe Open on the PGA Tour. This is the only exemption of it's kind on the PGA Tour. This will add another wrinkle to an already important collegiate event for 20 teams that will be here to compete in the spring. Please come out to watch if you can. Finally, VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! We need you help for the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford April 11-13. Play will start at 9:00 AM on Holes 1 and 10 on Sunday and Monday, and at 7:30 AM on Tuesday. Our shifts will be about 2.5 hours each. We need to fill 12 scoring positions each day, 14 spotting positions, and 4 leaderboard updating positions. Drinks and snacks will be provided. This is a great opportunity to contribute to Stanford Golf, and to support the Stanford team and the other fine teams playing in the US Intercollegiate. And, as you know those who volunteer at Stanford golf events during the year will be invited to play in the Appreciation Event in late November. You may sign up by (1) filling in the times and dates you prefer on the boards in the Clubhouse hallway, or (2) by contacting Dan Wagner by email (DanWagner@AOL.COM, 650-949-0554).

Winter Quarter Update ....

Greetings from the Farm! It has been a while since I last updated my blog. There have been a lot of things going on and great news to report!

The biggest story is our first big win of the year at Mauni Lani on the Big Island of Hawaii in the Hawaii Hilo Invitational. Coach Earl Tamiya, aka Big Earl, put on another great show. The event celebrated it's 20th year and 11 of the top 20 teams in the country were there to compete. With our victory we have won the tournament three of the last four years and each one seems to be more exciting and enjoyable. This year we had a complete team effort with each guy contributing in some important way. Sihwan Kim continues to show that he is in good form with 4th place finish and when we can have 4 guys in the top 30 in the individual rankings we usually will be OK.

Our amazing experience in Hawaii over the last few years has been made possible by our hosts for the week, Sukey and Irv Grousbeck. They make us all feel like we are playing in a "home event". Great food, comfortable accommodations, and loads of encouragement and support from the Grousbeck's really make the week one of a kind. Thank you!

More good news is that our Senior Captain Joseph Bramlett is healthy again and back competing 100%. Joe has really gone through a lot with the rehabbing of his wrist and it is great to finally have him back in the mix. He has been a wonderful leader of the team and his return is a great shot in the arm to an already deep team. Joe has been a real professional through all he has gone through.

Finally, looking ahead, we are competing again in the USC Invitational at North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village in a few weeks. We all look forward to the trip as we are defending champs and this is where Steve Ziegler picked up his first collegiate win last year. There will be many of the West Coast's top schools there so we are eager to get down there again and continue to gain valuable experience on the path the the post season.

Fall Season Closes ....

The fall season has wrapped up for Stanford Men's Golf and we are already looking forward to the spring! With a #2 ranking and some very solid play I believe we are poised for some exciting golf this spring.

The guys are in Dead Week this week and Finals week the next and everyone is catching their breath after a whirlwind fall season. We miss the most class time of any team on campus so this time of year the guys are really hitting the books. We will be in the "off season" until the middle of January and the team will use this time of fewer events to focus more on strength building in the weight room, mechanical work on the Siebel Complex, and catching up on all the things that need attention after the fall season.

Although we everyone around here felt like our fall campaign was a successful one it is very evident that we need to keep working hard and improving if we want to be in the best position to win a Championship this spring. We are excited to potentially have All-American and senior captain Joseph Bramlett back in the line-up in the new year. His rehab on his wrist has been going well and if healthy he can be a major part of our success this spring.

Focusing on the process not the product will be our goal moving forward and we appreciate all of the support that we have gotten along the way this fall. Our win at CordeValle in our final event of the fall was a special one against a very skilled OK State team and something to build upon.

Hello Everybody!

A few quick lines between The Prestige at PGA West and the Isleworth Intercollegiate to let you know all is well. The guys are fired up to get their first win ... hopefully coming this weekend in Florida.

The Prestige was a great week of golf on the heralded Stadium Course at PGA West. TCU had the hot hand as we mustered up a strong 2nd place finish. Congrats to David Chung and Sihwan Kim on their top-10's. One of many highlights from the Prestige was listening to "The Little Pro" Eddie Merrins address tournament banquet attendees on life, golf, and winning attitude. A very memorable speech for everyone that was present.

Isleworth will be the toughest field and golf course we have seen thus far. A great test of golf is in store and maybe some time with Tiger. Tiger was gracious enough to spend the morning with the team on the Monday of the President's Cup. A few fun pictures above. He was fantastic and exciting to see how proud he is of our program and Stanford. Inspirational to say the least. He wasn't to bad later in the week as well ... I later joked with him saying "Y.E. Yang might now be called Y. Me Yang!"

Back from the East Coast and Looking Ahead!

Hi Everyone!

The team has returned from a great trip back East and we are now a few days into the first week of school. Our first trip was fantastic! The golf we were able to play on the front end of the trip in New Jersey and on Long Island was incredible.

We started out the trip playing the #1 course in the world, Pine Valley. All of the things you look for in a golf course were there ... layout, difficulty, vistas, ambiance, and unique design just to name a few. The guys are still talking about Pine Valley and we are thankful to have the opportunity. We had very gracious hosts and what a memorable experience for the guys .... the first course of the year was the best course they might ever play!

After pine Valley we made our way up to Long Island where we unpacked our bags for a few days and had the chance to continue our special trip. We were able to see Sebonack, Friars Head, Shinnecock Hills, and National Golf Links. All were incredible and all very unique. A special thanks to one of our great golf alums, Ken Bakst for hosting a fundraising day at his course, Friars Head. His passion for the game and attention to detail have made Friars Head one of the best course any of us have ever played. At Shinnecock Hills we were able to get some rust off with a dual match against the Princeton Tigers. Coach Will Green has done a very good job with his program there and the match was very competetitive. The Cardinal ended up on top 3 1/2 to 1 1/2.

From Long Island we headed to Chicago and Olympia Fields for our first full field event. We played some very solid golf over three days and ended up alone in 4th place. We seemed to also get a little bit better each day and were within two shots of the lead with nine holes to play so we were close to accomplishing our goals. What a treat for the team to play the same course set up and hole locations as were used for the 2003 US Open. As I told the guys ... if you cannot figure out what you need to work on after these three rounds then you better start over.

So that brings us to this week, the first week of school, and what lies ahead. We have started our workouts- three days per week which includes strength training, stretching, cardio conditioning, and yoga. Our goal is to be the most fit team in the country as we move into the spring. A fresh body makes for good decisions and good golf. Just ask Tiger. Our next event is the Prestige at PGA West held on the Pete Dye Stadium Course. As you can see the challenging course don't let up. We are all excited to see how it goes and I know the freshman are eager to make their mark. I will be sure to continue the updates.

Stanford Golf Day at Friars Head on September 14th

We hope you have enjoyed reading all of the information we have been sending you recently with the new season on the horizon. I wanted to make special note of an opportunity that has presented itself on Long Island in September.

When Ken Bakst, class of 1980, heard that the Stanford Golf Team was going to be on the east coast to play a team match against Princeton at Shinnecock and in the Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields in Chicago, he kindly offered to host a fundraising outing for the Stanford Men’s Golf Team on Monday, September 14th at Friar’s Head on Long Island, NY. As I’m sure you can all appreciate this was a most welcome offer. On the trip will be our current starting six, my Assistant Coach Matt Tight, and myself. We are all very much looking forward to spending the day with a small number of Stanford supporters who would like to support our program and enjoy a great day of golf at Friar’s Head. For those of you who may not know, Friar’s Head is one of the world’s great new golf courses (currently ranked 22nd in the USA and 33rd in the World by Golf Magazine and 6th best course built in the USA in the last 50 years by Golfweek Magazine), and Ken is its Founding and Managing Member.

If you would like to participate in this event, details for which are included below, please let me know via reply email (conrad.ray@stanford.edu) as soon as possible because participation will be limited to not more than 72 golfers.

The U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford ... April 11-13, 2010

The 2010 US Intercollegiate will play host to 20 of the nations premier college golf teams for three beautiful days in April at the Stanford Golf Course. The majority of the Pac-10 Conference will be here and the golf will be fantastic to watch. A huge thanks to all of you that were able to compete in the 2009 Stanford Golf Alumni Match! It was the first win by the "old guys" in a very long time so a lot to celebrate. We really appreciate you taking the time out of your weekend to come and show your support for the team. I think the guys are primed for a successful post season run and now you all can say you were the motivation.

A total of 6 scores counted for each team and thanks to rounds of 64-66-66 by three current touring pros (Rob Grube, Jim Seki and Will Yanigisawa) the alumni edged out the varsity by a score of 411 to 425. See the complete scoring below:

Hello Friends of Stanford Men's Golf!

Sorry that it has been a while since my last post but things with the team have been in full gear. We are all getting ready for the 41st US Intercollegiate at Stanford this weekend. Can you say exciting!! Five of the top-25 teams in the country will be here and on those teams five of the top-25 individuals will also be in attendance. The golf promises to be as good as the forecast ... fantastic! We hope you can make it out to support the team and take it all in on this beautiful golf course we are so lucky to have.

Over the last few weeks the guys have come off a very impressive showing at The Golf Club of Georgia finishing second in the toughest field we have seen all year. Clemson ended up catching us on the back nine the final day, playing in snow flurries by the way, so it was a tough battle. David Chung, our star freshman, almost got his first collegiate victory as well so I hope all things are indicating a strong Cardinal sprint to the finish.

Speaking of the finish, NCAA's are right around the corner and it looks like we are in good shape to qualify for Regionals which is good news ... maybe even earning the #1 seed in the West. USC is ahead of us currently but with good showings at Stanford this weekend and at the Pac-10 Championship in Seattle in a few weeks we can maybe catch them. Regionals will provide a new challenge with only five teams advancing out of fifteen so we will have to be at the top of our games. The new match play format also will be very interesting at NCAA's if we play well enough to get there. So all in all plenty of things to look forward to. I believe our guys are up for the challenge.

I will make sure to keep you up to date on everything as it plays out and hope you can make it out to the course sometime this spring!

Hello Friends of Stanford Men's Golf!

I hope this posting finds all of you dreaming of birdies in 2009 and doing what it takes this time of year to make that a reality this spring and summer. We have been working hard as a team to prepare for our first event of the new year at the Mauni Lani North Course on the Big Island during the first week of February. The guys can't wait to get started!

The weather for us here on the Farm has been very mild so far and of course we are expecting sunshine in Hawaii. However, if you are reading this and looking outside your window and the snow is blowing and temperatures are below zero here are a few things that might help you get a leg up on your competition when the greens finally thaw out.

1) Stretch! One of the biggest things I see good college players and golfers of all levels struggle with after an extended lay off is keeping their golf muscles in shape. As a team we are spending 4 hours a week just on our fitness this time of year and I know it will pay off for us come NCAA time. I would encourage you to spend 15 to 20 minutes a day stretching to stay limber and fluid. Pay extra attention to your hamstrings, core, back and shoulders. A little time this time of year can really help with the time it takes to knock the rust off.

2) Get your clubs professionally fitted! It is amazing to me how many people play golf without ever taking the time to have their lie and loft angles checked or even better yet find someone in their area that is a professional club fitter to spend some time with. Most of the time, a set of clubs that you buy off the rack will not be set up to you specifications. With growing popularity of launch monitors, better technology in shafts and heads, and the ease by which the fitting process can be done, to me this should be a "no brainer" for the better player. You will be amazed what a few degrees of lie angle one way or another can make a huge difference in the dispersions of your shots. You won't be disappointed.

3) Putt! Putt! Putt! Almost everyone I know has room in their house where the carpeting rolls like a good day at Augusta. This is a great opportunity to work on your stroke. Putt your balls to a small target like a quarter or golf tee. Work on different distances and make up games for yourself. I promise that if you rolled 100 putts a day on a smooth surface indoors until the snow melted your handicap will show the work you put in. Putting is the name of the game ... especially inside of 6ft and now is your chance to make 2009 the year of the 1 putt!

Hello Friends of Stanford Men's Golf:

It has been a few months since I have checked in but I wanted to send over my thoughts on the fall and highlight a few of the good things going on with the program as move move towards the holidays.

This is a great time of year because the kids and coaches finally have some time to catch their breath and assess how the fall campaign went and what areas were good as well as the areas that still need work. As a team I was happy with our results the fall. We didn't bust into the winner's circle but we had some close calls and not being out of the top 8 in any event is a great accomplishment considering the strength of the fields we competed in. At our last event of the fall season, at CordeValle in early November, we played very well finishing second. Hats off to the week the Trojans had. It always stings a bit to get beat by USC but we played some solid golf and with a few saved shots here and there we will be right on track. All in all the results from the fall tell me we can definitely contend for another National Championship in May.

The next few weeks the team will be on their own for practice and workout finishing up fall quarter with Dead Week and Finals. They assure me that there will be nothing but straight A's so I have my fingers crossed!

We will crank up again with practice in mid-January and begin preparing for our first event on the Big Island at Mauni Lani in early February. I think by then we will all be excited about a little of that warm sunshine.

On the recruiting front you may have read that we signed two top prospects for the 2009 class to National Letters of Intent. We will also be adding one more freshman for a total of three to the incoming class of 2009. I believe these three players will part of one of the strongest freshmen classes in the country and excited to see their immediate impact.

I wish all of you a very healthy and happy holiday season and I look forward to keeping you up to date on our climb to a another national title.

Two Down and Two to Go

Hello Friends of Stanford Men's Golf!

It is crazy how fast time flies. We have returned this past week from our second event, the Prestige at PGA West, and are leaving for Orlando to play in the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational on Friday. We have been making great progress as a team and I think we are right in the spot we want to be as we head off to the biggest event of the season aside from NCAA's. The field is top notch and the Florida grasses and wind will create a great challenge for our guys. We can't wait. The website for more information is http://isleworthcollegiate.com.

We have had some great qualifying rounds in the last few weeks to see who gets to go to Florida and this internal team competition is a big asset for everyone. Our depth is going to be a key for our success in June and it is fun to see the guys compete for those top five spots now which will only lend itself to better things come spring.

In the desert at the Prestige we played the Norman Course at PGA West. Hats off to the entire staff at PGA West for making us feel very welcome and the course was in magnificent shape. With 4 of our top 5 players in the top 15 individually in the event there was much to be positive about. Third place is not as fun as winning but the guys deserve a ton of credit for their hard work and fight.

After Isleworth, we will be back on home soil for the CordeValle Collegiate. CordeValle is just south of San Jose so if any of you that are local would like to watch us play this fall we will be close to home. The course down there gets better every year. We are thankful for all of the support Jack and Rhodine Gifford give the event to make it so special. UCLA hosts at CordeValle but for me it feels like our own event because it is so close and because the kids are so familiar with CordeValle.

I look forward to checking back with you after CordeValle with a few victories in hand. As I tell my guys ... good golf is a lot more about managing mistakes than it is about hitting it close to the pin. Keep this in mind during your next practice session. Cardinal Golf Classic Recap and Here we Go!!!

The Cardinal Golf Classic for 2008 is in the books. We had a great day on the Farm last Friday afternoon and were able to make some very valuable dollars that help our team along the way. Thanks to everyone who participated and for all of your support. A special congratulations to the team of Jack and Rhodine Gifford, Daryl Donovan, and Rick Disney for their scorching hot round of 41 net. That was good enough to be crowned our champions for 2008 and win the crystal. Tremendous golf!

One person that we should take some time out to remember when we talk about the Cardinal Golf Classic is Kent winton who was one of the original founders of the Watson Tournament years ago (now named the Cardinal Golf Classic). Kent passed away earlier in the year and I have to admit the event on Friday felt like we were missing something. The only thing I can think of was Kent's presence. Kent loved the Watson, fighting for 1st place, and all of the fun to be had on our great day. He will be missed.

I also failed to thank Dr. Doug Yarris for his generous donation of all the wine we enjoyed for dinner and tee prizes. "Hope and Grace" is the label you need to look for! We really appreciate the gesture Doc!

The team is off tomorrow to the Chicago area for our first event of the new season at Olympia Fields, site of the 2003 US Open. Come back and visit for results. We are all hoping for good things. Also, one of our freshmen David Chung will be posting a few paragraphs when we get home about his experiences during his first collegiate event so please keep a look out for that.

Let The Games Begin!

It is hard to believe the summer is winding down and the new season is upon us. The guys check back in Monday the 8th and will will dive into the season. I am really eager to see the guys, the level of their improvement over the summer, and who ultimately qualifies for the first trip to Olympia Fields in the Chicago area in a few weeks. If you look at the summer that most of the team had, I think there is a lot to look forward to. Sihwan Kim finished in strong fashion with a great showing at the US Amateur to go along with three other qualifying to play as well. Jordan Cox, Steve Ziegler, and incoming freshman David Chung all competed and it was great to have such a strong Stanford contingent at Pinehurst. Well done boys! Also, Joseph Bramlett is back playing and healthy so we are really looking forward to his contributions and presence in the line-up.

Speaking of USGA events, good luck to golf alums Sandy McCall, Denny Alexander, and Van Salmans as they have all qualified to play in the US Senior Amateur. Well done boys! Make us old guys proud! On the alumni front as well, if you have not heard, we recently lost one of our most devoted Stanford golfers, Art Shroeder. We all send our best to his loved ones and family. Please take a minute to read the great tribute to Art that Bob Stevens has written on our site.

Besides the team goings-on and alumni news we are all looking forward to a great day Friday the 12th during our third annual Cardinal Golf Classic. We have 24 groups signed up and still have room for a few more but the day promises to be an awesome day celebrating the program. If you have not signed up please do!

The Siebel Varisty Golf Training Complex has been a huge hit on all fronts. Recruiting is going well and I think the verbal commitments we have gotten for the fall of 2009 will not disappoint. I look forward to sharing these names with you when the NCAA allows. The complex was a huge factor n their decisions. This month we will be over-seeding the 30 acre space so it will look great throughout the winter and spring.

Summer Update!

With the days of July upon us there is a ton to update you on from the world of Stanford Men's Golf. It is hard to believe that we are into July already but much has been happening and many of the Stanford players are well into their schedules filled with amateur golf.

Most if not all of the current team has seen some good action this summer already. Jordan Cox has returned from the US Open where he got a chance to hook up with Tiger Woods for a few practice rounds and then take his best shot during the event but coming up a bit short of the cut. An amazing experience nonetheless and a big confidence boost for Jordan who we will look for big things from in the fall. Sihwan Kim is playing well recording solid finishes in the Northeast Amateur and Sahallee Players Championship where Daniel Lim recently competed as well. Dodge Kemmer and Steve Ziegler just finished up in the North South Amateur where Steve made it to the first round of Match Play before being defeated. Many of the team will compete next week in the Players Amateur near Hilton Head South Carolina so keep an eye out for those scores as well.

On the Alumni front -- a huge congrats to Tiger on another major and for making all of us even more impressed with what he can accomplish... even on a bad knee. Notah Begay played in the PGA Tour event this week in DC and Rob Grube is tied for first in his pro debut on the Canadian Tour in Saskatchewan. Lets hope the putts drop for Rob over the next few days!

I recently have returned form the Palmer Cup in Irvine, Scotland where I had the honor to coach the U.S. side of the Palmer Cup. What a great trip we had... a ton of fun to see the top US players in action and experience links style golf. In the end the U.S. came up a few matches short to the Europeans but a trip we will not forget. I want to go back! Between golf camps running at full steam, a trip to Scotland, and recruiting trips at a yearly peak there has been little time to catch up but much to be excited about. Next season will be here before we know it and I can't wait.

Close Call!!!

Dear Friends of Stanford Men’s Golf,

We are back on the Farm after a bittersweet visit to Purdue University and the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, site of the 2008 NCAA Championships. After 4 rounds, 1149 total shots, and one of the most difficult courses we have played, we came up one shot short and took 2nd place in the field of 30. It’s been 23 years since a team has won back to back titles and we came very close. Our hats go off to the UCLA Bruins and Kevin Chappell for their dramatic win and a great week of golf. All in all our guys played their hearts out and as disappointing as the outcome was, we held our heads high knowing that we played as best as we had all year as a team and gave ourselves a true chance to win. Congrats to Sihwan, Rob, Dodge, Jordan and Steve for a memorable week of golf!

A few more congratulations are in order and I will list them below:

Sihwan Kim finished 4th at the NCAA Championships and was named to both College Golf Coaches Association's (CGCA) All-America First Team as well as to the All-America Freshman Team.

Rob Grube was named a Ping Third Team All-American. His selection as a Third Team All-American adds another honor to his decorated career at Stanford, which he recently completed at the NCAA Championships in May. This is the second time he has been bestowed Third Team honors, and the fourth year he has received All-American honors. In his freshman season he was an honorable mention, and in his junior year he was named to the Second Team.

Three Stanford men's golfers were honored with Pac-10 All-Academic awards, announced today by Commissioner Tom Hansen. Senior Rob Grube earned First Team honors, while juniors Dodge Kemmer and Daniel Lim were named to the Second Team.

Some more exciting news. Sophomore Jordan Cox qualified the U.S. Open being played at Torrey Pines in San Diego beginning this Thursday. We are definitely looking forward to watching him play. He should be ready for the tall rough at Torrey after a week at Purdue where the tall stuff was upwards of 8 to 10 inches. Good luck Jordan!

It’s sad to say that the 2008 season has come to an end. It’s been a great ride and I couldn't’t be any more proud of our guys. We have a young team with two great players coming in as freshman so the future is extremely bright for the Cardinal. Once again, thank you for all your continued support and generosity. It’s exciting to think about what lies ahead for Stanford Men’s Golf and continuing the winning tradition. Our best to you this summer and we look forward to getting back at it in the fall.

NCAA Championship .... Here We Come!!!!

Dear Friends of Stanford Men’s Golf:

I hope this finds everyone well. Well it’s that time of year again folks. The time of year where it’s go low or go home! The NCAA Championships is upon us and excitement and drama will take place next week in West Lafayette, IN home of Purdue University and the Brick Boilermaker Golf Complex. Winning an NCAA championship is a feat in and of itself but winning back to back titles is a rarity and something that hasn’t happened in 23 years. We hope to break that streak and keep the trophy right where it belongs, right here on The Farm.

The road to the finals was a tough one but our guys prevailed. This years West Regional took place at Gold Mountain Golf Club right outside of Seattle. The conditions proved difficult but we dug deep and finished 6th out of a competitive field of 30. Steve Ziegler, Dodge Kemmer, Jordan Cox, Sihwan Kim and team captain Rob Grube came up big on the final day and will try to carry that momentum forward into Nationals.

A few congrats are in order. Three Stanford golfers picked up 2008 Pac-10 awards upon the conclusion of the 2008 Pac-10 Championships, as announced by the conference on Thursday, May 1. Rookie Sihwan Kim was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and also picked up first team All-Pac-10 honors. Senior Rob Grube was also named first team All-Pac-10, and freshman Steve Ziegler was named as an honorable mention. Our hats go off to you for a great season. Well Done!!

Close Call at the U.S. Intercollegiate

Greetings from the Farm!

This past weekend we ran into a buzz saw! Unfortunately the buzz saw came in the form of a hot USC Trojan Golf team and course record 62 by USC golfer Rory Hie in the first round of the U.S. Intercollegiate. The boys were able to hang in there throughout the weekend after being 13 back after round 1 but we came up short finishing second at -2 for the 54 hole total.

The final round was definitely a bright spot with the team shooting -11 and our fifth kick-out score being plus one. This solid team effort is going to be a critical factor to our success as we move forward and eliminating high rounds will be important especially at the Pac-10 Conference tournament next week at the Meadow Club where we play with six players per team instead of five.

Next week promises to be a fun week and a bit of a shootout. We have plenty of motivation to do well. 1994 was the last year that Stanford won the Conference Championship. The Meadow Club is all about putting so we will put in some extra work this week with the flat stick and look to build on the momentum from this past weekend. Not mention, any time we can perform well in Golden Bear country it is a bonus.

I hope you can also take the time to check out the press release on the opening of our new practice complex, The Siebel Varsity Golf Training Complex. Look for a video tour that will be coming out shortly.

Spring Break Recap!

Greetings from the Farm!

Spring is upon us and we are nearing the end of our regular season schedule and quickly approaching post season play. The team has just returned from our spring break trip to Atlanta where we participated in the US Collegiate Championships hosted by Georgia Tech. This tournament is considered “The Masters” of college golf and the team was extremely excited to be invited this year. Overall our 11th place was a bit sluggish but the guys learned a lot ... including how to play in snowy conditions as we found in Round 1! The temps were low and the scores high but as the week went on we got better and our final round was more like what we are accustomed to. We hope to build on the experience going into our final event here at Stanford. We all witnessed that tournaments are won and lost from 100 yards and in, so keep that in mind as you practice and play this spring, I know our guys will!

Fortunately, we had a few days after the event to blow off some steam and enjoy some beautiful weather and local golf compliments of Stanford alums Rocky Rief and Brandon Farley. We had the opportunity to play Peachtree Country Club, home of Bobby Jones and which many say plays a close second to Augusta National in the state of Georgia. The team had an absolute blast and we are so thankful to Rocky and Brandon for putting this wonderful day together. Brandon hosted us the following day at Settindown Creek for another wonderful day of golf and plenty of laughs too. What a great way for the team to finish up Spring Break. Thank you again to the folks in Atlanta!

On the home front, we are looking forward to hosting the U.S Intercollegiate right here at Stanford University Golf Course, April 19-20. Come out and watch some of the top teams in golf compete on this great course and root the Cardinal on to a repeat victory in 08’. We have had tremendous support in the past and we hope you can make it out again this year.

Third Place at USC

Greetings from The Farm!

After a great victory in Hawaii, the squad recently participated in the USC Invitational held at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, CA. We walked away with a third place finish, which was a little disappointing but at the end of the day the guys really learned more about their games and how important it is to be able to control your golf ball under any conditions. Not only was the course set up a true test for these top collegiate players with tight fairways and hard, fast, greens, adding in a steady 25 mph wind was a recipe for some interesting golf. The conditions were definitely tough. The guys were challenged and emotions were tested, but all in all we played pretty steady and came very close to an incredible comeback being 11 shots back starting the final round and finishing only five out. Junior Dodge Kemmer had his career best finish and freshman Sihwan Kim continued his hot play both tying for third. Our hats go off to both USC and Tennessee for their great team play over the three rounds.

Our next tournament takes us to Atlanta, GA over spring break where Georgia Tech will host the United States Collegiate Championship. This event is considered by most as “The Masters” of college golf. We look forward to the challenging Golf Club of Georgia and a top rate field. Bringing home the hardware is our goal.

On the home front, we’re already looking forward to hosting the 39th annual U.S Intercollegiate right here at Stanford University Golf Course, April 19-20. This event is always a highlight of our season and I can definitely speak for the team in saying that we are extremely excited and hope to repeat as champions. A victory would go a long way in giving us the momentum going into the NCAA Regional and ultimately the NCAA Championships. We hope to see you out on the links rooting on the Cardinal!

For all of the Stanford Men’s Golf Alumni out there, the annual Alumni Match date has been set for April 12th 2008. We will have a 2pm shotgun start. There are still a few spots open so be sure to contact the golf office if you are interested in challenging the defending champs who are eager to strut their stuff against the old guys.

The Spring is Upon Us!

Dear Friends of Stanford Men's Golf:

I can't believe it but the spring season is already heating up! We have recently returned from our first event of the spring in Hawaii with the trophy in hand and looking forward to our next event hosted by the Trojans of USC in Westlake Village at North Ranch C.C.. Time flies when you are having fun!

The trip to the Big Island of Hawaii was as memorable as always. Rob Grube and Sihwan Kim played some stellar golf to lead us to victory. The other guys on the trip also played solidly which is the key in team golf and all of our hard off-season work paid off. Winning by three shots, it was fun to hold off a few formidable teams in USC and ASU. Both squads took their best shot in the final round but we were able to keep the charge at bay. The second round was one of the best team rounds I have ever been apart of as coach or player. Sihwan Kim's 63 and the team shooting -17 was a huge key to our success. Round two was actually the third lowest team round in the history of the program. Fun to make history and more importantly it was a glimpse into how much firepower this team has when everyone contributes. I would look for big things from Rob and Sihwan as the spring plays out.

One thing worth noting about the week was the absence of All-American Junior Joe Bramlett. Joe has been in the line-up for every event since he has been here so to not have him was really felt by all. Suffering from a partially torn ligament in his wrist after an accidental fall he was unable to make the trip. The prognosis is good and he should be back at it soon but we have been very cautious as wrist injuries can be touchy! Joe is such a big part of this team and such a competitor that I am sure he will be back in the rotation soon.

Another fun outing was our recent trip to Monterey to play a one day dual match against ASU at the famed Cypress Point Club on February 15th. We lucked out with some fantastic weather and good scoring. We were able to beat the Sun Devils four matches to two to retain the third annual Peninsula Cup. To be able to play to play a head to head match against a great team in ASU on one of the best courses in the world was a real treat for all and a memory that will last a long time. Thanks to Mr. Sandy Tatum for his help in making the day possible.

The guys have a few weeks now before heading to USC's event. The time will be spent working on their games and qualifying for USC. We are always preparing for what lies ahead. I think this team has the ability to really surprise some people. I have read about the "championship hangover" and I just don't buy it. With a young team it cannot be forced and results will come. By June, we will be ready to defend our title with vigor and the guys deserve success because they have been working their butts off. It has been fun to be a part of it and we appreciate everyone's support. Thanks to all and Go Cardinal!

Stanford Winter All-Star Camp a Success!

The 2007 Stanford Winter All-Star Golf Camp is now in the books and it was a huge success. With representation from all over the country, as well as Mexico, the quality of golf was at its highest and the overall results were very impressive. Many thanks to the parents, the campers and the support staff for all their hard work and dedication in making this another impressive event here on the Farm. We look forward to continuing our success this summer with our highly regarded Stanford University Summer Golf Camp taking place at the newly developed Siebel Varsity Golf Training Complex.

Winter Update!

Greetings and Happy New Year from “The Farm” ! I hope this finds
everyone well and rested after a nice holiday break. I wanted to give a
few updates on the team as we get ready to start the spring season. We
are really looking forward to getting back at it as we gear up for our
first tournament of the year in Hawaii. The official start of the
spring season kicks off with practice on January 19th and we are excited with what lies ahead for the team.

The guys have been using the holiday to really focus on their fitness and
mental preparation for the year. It’s a tough road to the NCAA’s and we
want to be sure that our guys are mentally and physically sharp for our
busy tournament schedule. The Taylor MadeWaikoloa Invitational is our
first event and a great way to start off the year. We really want to
set the tone early so a good finish in Hawaii is key.

One highlight to the coming year is our tournament here at the Stanford
University Golf Course April 19-20, 2008. The U.S. Intercollegiate is
in its 40th year and it is a great event. We look forward to all the
local support we have received in the past. Following the U.S.
Intercollegiate we will be entering in the exciting home stretch
towards the NCAA’s. Purdue University will be the host venue for the
finals this year and we look forward to defending our National
Championship. With the squad we have and our experience from last year,
I am confident we have what it takes to repeat and we look forward to
the challenge. I will keep you up to date on all our accomplishments as
the season unfolds. Thank you again for all your support and interest
and on behalf of the team we wish you all the best in 08”.

Cardinal Win the 16th Annual Big Game Cup

Congratulations to the Stanford Cardinal on winning the 16th Annual Big Game Cup! It was a true fight the entire day but luckily the Card came out on top scoring 41 points to Cal's 40 in team best ball competition. The Cup has been in the hands of the Bears for quite a few of the last 16 years so it is great to get it back on this side of the Bay! Great job to everyone that played and thanks for your support. Go Cardinal!

Hello everyone ... especially Friends of Stanford Men's Golf!

Welcome to the new Stanford Men's Golf Website. I am excited to be part of this
great project and I think it will serve a vital need for the golf community and provide a way for all of us to come together and celebrate the richness of our world renowned program.

In this blog I look forward to giving you a few insights on what the team is up
to and how everyone is playing. I will also be reminding you of some of
our upcoming team and community events. This website will be the place
where you can come to get all the information you are looking for!

It is hard to believe that the fall season is behind us. Looking back, I
think there are numerous things that went really well and a few things
we need to continue to work on as we move towards the NCAA's in June at
Purdue. The team competed five times this fall with a few close calls to
victory. There were numerous highlights and here are a few for you to enjoy...

1) Dinner with Tiger ... Playing at Tiger's home course in the Isleworth
Intercollegiate was a treat. Tiger was around for three full days and
hosted the team at his place for dinner after the first round. What a
great set up he has there ... his house is right off the tee box of the driving
range, the golf course is an awesome test, and he is treated like a
king! The hospitality carried over to us for our short time there and
the guys enjoyed getting to know Tiger better and hearing and seeing
why he is so successful. His thoughts on the importance of shotgame, playing strategy, and putting were very enlightening for both players and coach. I was especially impressed with how passionate he is about Stanford and his desire to win. I told him that he missed his calling in coaching and mentioned that anytime he wanted to be our volunteer assistant he would be welcome! The team struggled a bit on
the bermuda greens but even though it was the lowest finsh of the fall I feel like it may have been the most meaningful week. Freshman Sihwan Kim's quote after chunking
his driver off the tee with Tiger watching was hilarious ..." Coach ...
when Tiger was there my body wouldn't move!!!" A life changing week for
all of us!

2) Tokyo here we come.... The team competed in the Topy Cup in at Tanagura
Country Club just outside Tokyo this fall. This was the first event of
the year and the first time Stanford has been invited to play since
1994. I was actually on the team back then and got to take Tiger's spot
after he qualified for the Walker Cup. It hasn't changed much over
there and the event is still very special. Seeing the kids enjoy the
local customs, food, and golf was priceless and we had a real chance to
win until the final round where westruggleed a bit coming in. The team
that won is Japan's top university team and interestingly enough there
are no amateurism rules, scholarship limitations, or squad limits so it
truly was the best of the best.

3) The Siebel Varsity Traing Complex... On the home front on our new practice facilty is really taking shape. We are close to finishing the grassing portion of the project with almost 30 acres of sod being laid. With six green complex's
over 30 acres I am hard pressed to find anything else like it in the
country. The team will benefit in so many ways not to mention what it
means for recruiting. Please feel free to contact me if you want a tour
or check out the facilities tab on the new website for photos and layout.

There are a ton of great memeoris as you can tell and much to be thankful for but we are really looking forward to what lies ahead. I feel like this team has just as good of chance to win as did last year's. Experience and finding out which five guys will be our starters is what we need to work through as we move forward. We
are very deep, very talented, and of common purpose. Now it is just a
matter of having the confidence and work ethic needed to get there. It
has been over 20 years since a team has won back to back titles and I
think we can do it this year.

I hope this short note finds you doing well and enjoying your summer. We are doing our best on this end to soak up the amazing feeling of being the 2007 National Champions and we are already looking forward to the start of next season. The top five guys report back to campus on August 31st in preparation for our first event just outside of Tokyo, Japan. We can't wait to get started and it is all possible because of your support.

The purpose of this note is to let you know that we have identified November 2nd, 2007 as the day that we will have our third annual Cardinal Golf Classic. Hopefully those of you that have played in the past can attest to how nice the day is for all that participate. Like last year we will have wonderful tee gifts, food, and auctions items for you to bid on. The afternoon of November 2nd is also the afternoon before the Stanford vs. Washington football game. We hope you can make a weekend out of it and cheer the Cardinal on to victory.

By the first part of September we will be forwarding on the particulars as far as cost structure, times and final details. The afternoon promises to be a great one and we hope you can make it to celebrate Stanford Golf's Eighth National Championship as well as the season ahead. The last time we saw our dear old pal Dick McElyea was when we all gathered to pay tribute to a wonderful Championship Golf Team.

Dick had to make a great competitive effort just to be there. Obviously in poor health and facing almost immediate surgery, none of that was going to keep him from honoring these brand new National Champions.

Just a few short days later he had putted out on 18 and headed for that big clubhouse in the sky. What a tragic and sudden loss it was for all of us.

Now we are going to gather one again, just behind that 18th green at Stanford, tell a few stories, bring back some great memories and probably fight back a tear or two!

Please join us on Saturday, August 4 at 5:30 p.m. to recall the great McElyea triumphs, that day a few years ago when McElyea and "Sam" O'Donnel emptied the great old hotel at Turnberry at 5:00 a.m. and that great joy which "Wimpy" always displayed with your three dollars after he had just won the front, the back, and the match!!!

The Passing of a Stanford Golf Great

With sadness I send the news about the passing of one of Stanford Golf's All-Time great players, Dick McElyea, on June 19th. Thanks to Richard Harris, Grant Spaeth, and Art Shroeder for their help compiling Dick's very memorable record.

J. Richard "Dick" McElyea, two-time Pacific Coast Conference individual golf champion (1950, 1951), and member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame, died June 19 in Palo Alto. He had entered the Stanford Hospital for surgery for lung cancer (he had never smoked); he died shortly thereafter of a heart attack. Dick grew up in Palo Alto, and learned golf at the Stanford Golf Course from his father Ralph McElyea, a mid-Peninsula haberdasher, who was an early member of the Stanford Golf Club. Golf has been a multi-generational passion of the McElyeas, and Dick's grandsons Conor and Cory McElyea are outstanding junior golfers. At Stanford, Dick's teammates called him "Goo," because he was baby-faced. After graduating from Stanford in 1952 with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Dick obtained an MBA in 1954 from Stanford Business School. He was a founder and executive vice president of Economic Research Associates, a prominent San Francisco-based real estate and business consulting firm that specialized in golf, resort, recreational, and other real estate developments, worldwide. His work frequently took him to Scotland, and of course he brought his clubs. Dick's last golfing activity was June 13 at the patio behind Stanford's 18th green, where he took part in the celebration of the 2007 NCAA championship team. Dick was a fun-loving guy, who with his wife Ann enthusiastically hosted many large and fun parties. Ann says that a "Joy Fest will happen later--maybe after an improved Stanford football team weekend this coming Fall."

Greetings from the Farm! I wanted to send you a quick update with some exciting news on the team. We have just returned from the NCAA Western Regional Golf Championship hosted by Arizona State. The week was very challenging and pressure packed but we successfully qualified for the 2007 NCAA Championship! The event will be held at the Golden Horseshoe Resort in Williamsburg, VA, May 30th through June 2nd. Your support throughout the entire season has been fantastic. If you are in the Williamsburg area next week please feel free to come out and cheer us on . I hope the next time I write we will be hoisting Stanford's eighth National Championship.

Stanford Men Advance To NCAA Championships
Team finishes seventh overall; Joseph Bramlett ties for 10th individually.

Tempe, Ariz. - The Stanford men's golf team shot a 14-under par 274 on the final day of competition at the NCAA West Regional to finish seventh overall with a three-round score of 33-under 831. As one of the top 10 finishers in the regional, the Cardinal advance to the NCAA Championships at the end of the month. South Carolina took top honors with a 44-under 820. UCLA finished two stroke back at 822. Rounding out the top five were Southern California (824), Arizona State (824) and Vanderbilt (826).

Also advancing to the NCAA Championships are Arizona (828), New Mexico (833), Wake Forest (839) and East Tennessee State (839). Daniel Summerhays of BYU and Chance Pipitone of Penn qualified for the two individual spots.

The top 10 teams of the 27 who competed are advancing to the 2007 NCAA Championships held in Williamsburg, Va., May 30-June 2 at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (hosted by Virginia Commonwealth).

Freshman golfer Joseph Bramlett fired a six-under 66 this afternoon to move from 23rd into a tie for 10th individually with a three round score of 12-under 204 (71-67-66). Bramlett went four under on the back nine with birdies on 10, 14, 15 and 17.

Teammates Daniel Lim (72-71-66) and Zack Miller (67-71-71) tied for 36th on the individual leaderboard with a seven-under 209. Senior Matt Savage tied for 53rd with a four-under 212 (70-71-71). Junior Rob Grube rounded out the list of Cardinal competitors, finishing tied for 71st at two-under 214 (69-74-71).
Arizona State's Benjamin Alvarado took individual medalist honors with an 18-under 198 for the tournament.

The Cardinal, with six tournament wins on the year, advance to the NCAA Championship for the second time in the past 10 seasons (2005). They are a seven-time NCAA champion with most recent coming in 1994.

Field Set For 2007 NCAA Men's Golf Championships
Stanford among 30 squads and six individual who will battle for collegiate golf's top honors.

Stanford, Calif. - Following the three regional tournaments this past weekend, the field is set for the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, to be hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va.

The 30 squads participating in the team championship include Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Duke, East Tennessee State, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Lamar, Louisville, Michigan State, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Southern California, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas, Texas Tech, Tulsa, UCLA, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

Along with the 150 players from the above schools, six additional golfers will battle for the individual title, including Daniel Summerhays of Brigham Young, Kyle Stanley of Clemson, Chance Piptone of Pennsylvania, Zach Sucher of UAB, Tim Streng of Western Illinois and Dan Woltman of Wisconsin.
The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships will be held May 30-June 2. For ticket information, please call the VCU ticket office at 828-7267.

Four Advance To U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier
Ray, Miller, Bramlett and Cox make it through first stage of the U.S. Open qualifying rounds.

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford head men's golf coach Conrad Ray and several currrent student-athletes made a strong showing yesterday at two different U.S. Open local qualifiers. Ray, along with senior Zack Miller and freshmen Joseph Bramlett and Jordan Cox, advance to the U.S. Open sectional qualifier. The Championships will be played June 14-17 at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvannia.

Cox advanced to sectionals out of the U.S. Open local qualifier held at Del Rio CC yesterday while Ray, Bramlett and Miller advanced from the qualifier held in Half Moon Bay. Bramlett recorded the low score of the day with a 66.

Five Stanford golfers earn all-conference honors.

Walnut Creek, Calif. - Niklas Lemke of Arizona State and Jamie Lovemark of USC have been named Pac-10 Co-Golfers of the Year and Stanford coach Conrad Ray has been named Pac-10 Coach of the Year in voting by the Pac-10 men's golf coaches. Lovemark also has been named Freshman of the Year. In addition, the 2007 All-Pac-10 Men's Golf Team selected by the coaches was announced.

Ray, in his third year as head coach, has directed a remarkable resurgence in Stanford golf. Stanford is currently the top-ranked team in the nation by Golfweek by virtue of winning six of the 11 tournaments it entered this year, with two other runnerup finishes. The Stanford team victories came in the Gopher Invitational, The Prestige at PGA West, the Corde Valle Classic, the UH-Hilo Invitational, the Ashworth Collegiate Invitational and the U.S. Intercollegiate. Ray is a former player and team captain at Stanford and was a member of the Cardinal's 1994 NCAA Championship team.

The Pac-10 golf awards and the All-Pac-10 Team are voted on by the Conference head golf coaches. Following is the complete list of honors:

Greetings from the Farm! Believe it or not the 2007 post season for the Stanford Men's Golf Team has arrived! We have just returned from the Pac - 10 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Since our last newsletter the #1 Cardinal has covered a lot of ground and made a fair share of putts so we want to tell you about it. Please take a minute to check out some of the stories on our events, up to date statistics, and links to interesting tidbits on the team below. Team Results...

Since our last newsletter in late February the team has played in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Westlake Village, CA, Eugene, Oregon, and at Stanford. In those four events we had 2 wins, 1 second, and a fifth place finish. The 40th annual Intercollegiate at Stanford marked our sixth win of the season which ties a school record for most team wins in a season.

Rio Mar, Puerto Rico

Freshman Joseph Bramlett wins his first collegiate tournament with a seven-under par 209. (Men Golf Ties for Second at Puerto Rico Classic)

Paced by freshman golfer Joseph Bramlett, the Stanford men's golf team tied for second at the Puerto Rico Classic today turning in a three-round total of 851 (281-279-291). Georgia won the tournament by one stroke with an 850. Clemson tied with the Cardinal at 851, followed by Alabama (855) and East Tennessee State (856).

Stanford's Joseph Bramlett won his first collegiate tournament, tying for top honors with Georgia Tech's Roberto Castro. Bramlett shot rounds of 69-67 and 73 to finish with a seven-under par 209.

Matt Savage turned in another top 25 finish as the senior from Arizona tied for 12th on the individual leaderboard with a two-under par 214 (68-70-76). Junior Rob Grube moved up into a tie for 27th on the final day after he fired a three-under par 69 today to finish at two-over par 218 (73-76-69). Teammate Dodge Kemmer tied for 33rd overall with a three-over par 219 (71-73-75), just one stroke behind Grube. Senior Zack Miller tied for 39th with a 221 (78-69-74).

Men's Golf Captures USC Collegiate Invitational Crown

Three golfers finish in the top 10 individually.

The Stanford men's golf team, ranked second nationally, shot a blistering five under par 279 in the final round of the 30th annual USC Collegiate Invitational at North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village, Calif., to win the tournament by three strokes with a three round score of four-under par 848.

USC held a one-shot lead over No. 2 Stanford entering the final round as well as a three-shot lead over No. 7 UCLA and 7-shot edge on Tennessee.

But soon after the final four teams began play, the tournament turned into a two-team contest between the Trojans and Cardinal. USC held a slim lead for the first half of the day, only to see Stanford pull ahead midway through back 9.

The teams seesawed over the final few holes, the Cardinal prevailing with a three-day 848 to USC's 853. Stanford finished with a final round 279, overcoming Troy's 285.

No. 15 Tennessee was third at 868, followed by No. 12 UCLA at 870 and No. 8 Brigham Young at 873 to round out the top five.

Individually, freshman Joseph Bramlett moved into a tied for seventh after carding a round of two-under 69 today for a one-under 212 for the tourney. Teammates Rob Grube (74-72-69) and Zack Miller (73-67-75) tied for 10th on the individual leaderboard with a 215. Stanford's Daniel Lim (69-77-70) and Matt Savage (72-73-71) tied for 15th at 216. Matt Shin, competing as an individual, finished 66th with a 231 (74-78-79).

USC's Rory Hie carded only an even-par 71 Tuesday, but it was enough to give him a two shot victory over teammate Jamie Lovemark and Loyola Marymount's Brian Locke.

Today's victory marks the fifth win for the Cardinal this season.

Cardinal Men Finish Fifth At Oregon Duck Invitational

Senior Matt Savage ties for sixth individually; Three golfers finish in the top 20.

Eugene, Ore. - The Stanford men's golf team shot a blistering 283 on the final day of competition at the Oregon Duck Invitational to move up five spots and finish fifth overall with a three-round total of 880 (300-297-283). The Cardinal's round of 283 was the low team round of the day. USC won the tournament with an 868, followed by Oregon State (874), Arizona (875), Oregon (875) and Stanford (880).

The weather was overcast, few light showers with temperatures around 50 at the par-72, 7,033-yard Eugene Country Club.
Stanford was led by senior golfer Matt Savage who shot a two-under par 70 today to end the invite with a 219 (75-74-70) and tied for sixth individually. Teammate Daniel Lim tied for 12th after carding a 220 (72-77-71) while senior Zack Miller tied for 17th with a 221 (76-74-71). Freshman Joseph Bramlett tied for 27th (77-73-74) along with Rob Grube (77-76-71) with a 224. Rounding out the Stanford competitors was Matt Shin who tied for 65th with a 238 (81-80-77).

There was a three-way tie for top individual honors with Washington's Alex Prugh, UCLA's Kevin Chappell and USC's Jamie Lovemark all checking in with a two-under par 214 for the tournament.

Stanford is next in action April 14-15 when they host the U.S. Intercollegiate at the Stanford Golf Course.

Cardinal Men Claim U.S. Intercollegiate Title (First tournament title at home event since 1995.)
Stanford's Rob Grube wins individual medalist honors for second consecutive year.

Stanford, Calif. - The nationally ranked Stanford men's golf team won its sixth tournament of the season with a victory today at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal tied with Minnesota with a three-round total of two-under par 838, but won the tiebreaker for top tournament honors (tiebreaker calculated by the three day total of the throw-out score each day - Stanford had a 219 while Minnesota had a 223). Cardinal Rob Grube was crowned the individual champion, firing an eight-under par 202 for the tournament.

Oregon State finished third (860), followed by UC Irvine (862), Washington (866), Nevada (867), Colorado State (871), Missouri (873), Washington State (875), UC Davis (879) and Arkansas (879).

Minnesota actually led by one stroke with one hole left, but Stanford's Rob Grube made par on the 18th (par 4) while Golden Gopher Bronson LaCassie bogeyed to tie up the two teams.

The Cardinal placed five golfers in the top 20 individually.
Stanford's Daniel Lim, competing as an individual, finished third overall with a four-under par 206 (67-70-69). Senior Matt Savage placed sixth with an even par 210 (72-68-70). Freshman Joseph Bramlett tied for seventh at one-over 211 (71-68-72) while teammate Dodge Kemmer, competing as an individual, tied for 12th with a 213 (69-74-70). Freshman Jordan Cox tied for 21st after carding a 216 (72-72-72) and senior Zack Miller tied for 30th with a 218 (75-71-72). Cardinal Matt Shin, competing as an individual, tied for 51st with a 224 (73-70-81).

Stanford's six tournament victories is the most since the Tiger Woods era in the mid '90's.

Eugene, Ore. - Paced by junior Rob Grube, the Stanford men's golf team placed fourth at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships at the Eugene Country Club with a four-round score of 1,436. Stanford shot a five-under 355 today in the final round. USC won their first Pac-10 title, firing a 51-under par 1,389 at the par 72, 7,033 yard course. The margin of victory was the third-largest in conference history, and the most since 2000, when Arizona State won the tournament by 37 strokes with a 56-under.

UCLA finished second in the tournament after their final round 3-under 357 left the Bruins at 15-under 1425. Arizona State's Niklas Lemke finished second in the individual race with a 13-under 275 to help the Sun Devils finish third at 1433.

After Stanford, it was Washington (1453), followed by Arizona (1457), Oregon State (1458), Oregon (1464), California (1468) and Washington State (1484).

USC's Jamie Lovemark took home the individual title with a 19-under par 269 over four rounds of play.

Stanford's Rob Grube capped a successful four rounds with a seventh place finish, carding a six-under 282 (71-70-71-70). Senior Matt Savage turned in a top 20 finish, tying for 16th overall at even par 288 (70-76-71-71). Fellow senior Zack Miller tied for 22nd with a 290 (71-75-73-71) while teammates Daniel Lim (70-75-75-72) and Joseph Bramlett (78-70-71-73) tied for 28th with a 292. Freshman Jordan Cox tied for 41st with a 296 (74-74-77-71).

Grube To Compete For USA at US-Japan Collegiate Golf Championship

The 32nd annual competition will be held July 11-13 in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

Norman, Okla. - The 12-member American team has been selected for the 2007 Fuji Xerox U.S.A. vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship. The team - which consists of eight mens and four womens collegiate players - will be coached by Wake Forest's Jerry Haas and Melissa Luellen from Arizona State. The 32nd annual competition will be held July 11-13 at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

Bronson Burgoon of Texas A&M, UCLA's Kevin Chappell, Jacqui Concolina of Vanderbilt, Rochester's Stephen Goodridge, Rob Grube of Stanford, Duke's Jennie Lee, Chris McCartin of Wake Forest, Oklahoma City's Daniel Mitchell, Jennifer Osborn of Arizona State, Sonoma State's Jarin Todd, Alison Walshe of Arizona and Kansas Gary Woodland comprise the U.S. squad.
Team USA leads the all-time series, 24-7, and has won 11-straight competitions.

Ziegler Named To 2007 USA World Junior Golf Team

Incoming freshman to represent America, June 19-22 in Japan.

Norman, Okla. - Spencer Cole of Greer, S.C., Russell Henley of Macon, Ga., Andrew Putnam of University Place, Wash., and Steve Ziegler of Broomfield, Colo., will represent their country in the 2007 World Junior Golf Team Championship June 19-22 in Toyota City, Japan. Coaching Team USA will be Kyle Blaser of Oklahoma City University. The Americans are looking to regain the title after winning the championship in 2004 and 2005 and placing fifth in last year's event.

This year's event will take place at the Chukyo Golf Club - the same location that has hosted the tournament the previous two years.

Cole - an Alabama signee - is a 2005 Third-Team and 2006 Honorable Mention AJGA Rolex All-American. The Canon Cup Team member won the 2006 and 2007 Verizon Junior Heritage Tournament as well as the 2006 AJGA Hargray Classic. "It's a very big deal and I'm really looking forward to the opportunity," Cole said.

Henley is a three-time Georgia All-State selection and two-time Georgia State Golf Association Player of the Year. He won the 2005 Middle Georgia Championship Tournament and the 2006 Georgia State Golf Association Junior Golf Championship. "I never thought I would be on this team, but now that I've been selected, I'm very excited," the Georgia signee said.

Putnam - the 2006 Washington and Pacific Northwest Player of the Year - is a Second-Team AJGA Rolex All-American. He won the 2006 AJBA Pacific Northwest and was a semi-finalist at the U.S. Junior. "Anytime you get a chance to represent your country is a great opportunity. The feeling is just amazing," said Putnam, a signee at Pepperdine University.

Ziegler - an AJGA HP Scholastic All-American and Second-Team AJGA Rolex All American - is the two-time high school player of the year in Colorado. He won the 2006 FCWT UNM Golf Classic and finished as the runner-up at the 2006 AJGA Midwest Junior. He has signed with Stanford. "I was thrilled [to be invited]," Ziegler commented. "There is no greater privilege than to represent your country."
