With sadness I send the news about the passing of one of Stanford Golf's All-Time great players, Dick McElyea, on June 19th. Thanks to Richard Harris, Grant Spaeth, and Art Shroeder for their help compiling Dick's very memorable record.

J. Richard "Dick" McElyea, two-time Pacific Coast Conference individual golf champion (1950, 1951), and member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame, died June 19 in Palo Alto. He had entered the Stanford Hospital for surgery for lung cancer (he had never smoked); he died shortly thereafter of a heart attack. Dick grew up in Palo Alto, and learned golf at the Stanford Golf Course from his father Ralph McElyea, a mid-Peninsula haberdasher, who was an early member of the Stanford Golf Club. Golf has been a multi-generational passion of the McElyeas, and Dick's grandsons Conor and Cory McElyea are outstanding junior golfers. At Stanford, Dick's teammates called him "Goo," because he was baby-faced. After graduating from Stanford in 1952 with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Dick obtained an MBA in 1954 from Stanford Business School. He was a founder and executive vice president of Economic Research Associates, a prominent San Francisco-based real estate and business consulting firm that specialized in golf, resort, recreational, and other real estate developments, worldwide. His work frequently took him to Scotland, and of course he brought his clubs. Dick's last golfing activity was June 13 at the patio behind Stanford's 18th green, where he took part in the celebration of the 2007 NCAA championship team. Dick was a fun-loving guy, who with his wife Ann enthusiastically hosted many large and fun parties. Ann says that a "Joy Fest will happen later--maybe after an improved Stanford football team weekend this coming Fall."
